SERD Dean Prof. Rajendra Shrestha joined a delegation led by AIT President Dr Eden Woon to Nepal during 7-10 February 2019. The delegation visited Kathmandu University, Nepal and met the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and several senior officers on 7 February 2019. Two parties discussed about several issues on academic/research collaboration, student exchange, unified and dual degree program.

On 8 February, the AIT delegation met with Dr. Sunil Babu Shrestha, Vice Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and his team. The discussion included the renewal of MoU between AIT and NAST, capacity building of NAST staff to join post-graduate and short courses training programs at AIT, research collaboration between AIT faculty members and NAST researchers, and involving AIT Nepalese students in the research areas suggested by NAST.

At the meeting with Mr. Suraj Vaidya, President of Vaidya Organization of Industries & Trading Houses (Nepal), and Former President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the possible collaboration with the private sector was discussed.

The AIT delegation also met the Finance Minister Honorable Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada, the Foreign Affairs Minister Honorable Mr. Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, and the Vice-Chairman of National Planning Commission Honorable Prof. Dr. Puspa Raj Kadel separately to follow-up on AIT’s earlier request about scholarship and research fund to Nepalese students. It was learnt that the proposal is put in a process for government endorsement.

On 9 February 2019, AIT Day Nepal was held in Hotel Himalaya. About 100 prospective students attended the event excluding parents and alumni. The event was supported by AITAA-Nepal chapter.

On 10 February, Prof. Rajendra Shrestha met Dr Chandika Bhatta, Executive Director of Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA), Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Nepal. SEZA has the responsibility to establish and operationalize Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Since SEZA is at the initial stages of establishing Special Economic Zones, they seek AIT technical advices with regard to infrastructural planning (landscape, transport, environment, waste, electrical, logistics).

Similarly, Prof. Rajendra Shrestha also met with Dr Siddharth Bajracharya, Executive Director of National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Nepal, which is an independent public agency working in the area of natural resource conservation, alternative energy, sustainable tourism, community infrastructure development, gender equity and empowerment. The NTNC is implementing a large-scale project soon and expects AIT to help with capacity building programs in the areas mentioned above. NTNC also indicated that they are interested to do MoU with AIT.
